WSJ: the authorities in new York temporarily stop the issuance of licenses to Uber drivers

NEW YORK, August 9. /Basereporter.com/. The authorities of new York intend to temporarily stop issuing new drivers licenses services, online taxi service, including Uber and Lyft. About it reported in a Wednesday newspaper The Wall Street Journal.

According to her, the city Council has decided to suspend for one year the issuance of such licenses. As expected, mayor bill de Blasio, who played one of the sponsors of this initiative and will sign the bill in the coming weeks. Thus, new York will become the first city in the United States, where it will enter into force restrictions on the issuance of new licenses for these services, the newspaper reports.

This measure was part of a package of proposals aimed at combating traffic congestion in the city and to prevent a reduction in the level of earnings drivers official taxi services. Discussion of the bill occurred on the background of the requirements from the drivers cab to ban or severely restrict services Uber and Lyft in new York.

The company, in turn, was strongly opposed to the initiative of the authorities. They claimed that the suspension of licenses would adversely affect the outlying areas of the city, where the underdeveloped public transportation. In addition, according to them, this situation can lead to an increase in the cost of travel by taxi, Uber, Lyft and other similar companies, the demand for which in new York is only growing. “Uber will do everything in its power in order to cope with growing demand”, – the newspaper quotes words of the representative of the company Daniel Filson.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the demand for services of online taxi booking in recent years new York has increased significantly. In 2015, the city had about 25 thousand cars Uber, Lyft and other similar companies. To date, the city registered more than 80 thousand taxi services data.
