MOSCOW, August 24. /Basereporter.com/. The official representative of Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova denied on Friday information that during yesterday’s telephone conversation between foreign Ministers of US and Russia Michael Pompeo asked Sergei Lavrov to support the Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW) Washington’s efforts to attract Syrian government accountable for using chemical weapons. Her response posted on the website of the foreign Ministry.
“Once again forced to pay attention to the interpretive view of the American side of the contents of the contacts of high-ranking representatives of Russia and the USA. Statements [head of the press service of the U.S. Department of state Heather] Nauert are not true, such complaints are not voiced Pompeo,” said Zakharov.
She noted that Moscow considers “such a distorted presentation of” the conversation as Washington’s attempt to use bilateral dialogue on the Syrian conflict to advance its own political agenda in Syria and in the framework of the OPCW. According to Zakharova, the Russian side expects that in the future Washington will be careful in comments on the results of the negotiations of the leadership of the foreign ministries of the Russian Federation and the United States.
According to her, Moscow supports the work of the OPCW, but strictly in accordance with the objectives defined by the Convention on the prohibition of chemical weapons and which consists in technical assistance of netprogrammes the destruction of chemical arsenals. Zakharov noted that the Convention does not contain provisions that would entail the establishment of a special attribute mechanism for the establishment responsible for the use of chemical weapons.
“We consider such actions as undermining fundamental to the OPCW, the spirit of consensus and threatening the very preservation of the global regime of chemical disarmament and non-proliferation,” – said the official representative of the foreign Ministry.
